How to use The Wheel Of Life

The Wheel of Life is a powerful and simple self-coaching tool that helps you gain clarity on what you need to be at your best. It encourages self-reflection across key areas of your personal and professional life, helping you identify where you’re thriving and where you might need to refocus.

What Is the Wheel of Life?

Imagine your life as a wheel made up of different spokes or segments. Each one represents a different area of your life that contributes to your overall sense of fulfilment, energy, and balance. When all areas feel strong and aligned, the wheel turns smoothly. When some areas are neglected or under pressure, the wheel becomes wobbly.

How to Use This Tool

Draw Your Wheel
Take a blank circle and divide it into 8 slices (like a pizza). Each slice represents one area of your life. You can use the suggested categories below or create your own (example below)

      Choose Your Life Areas
Reflect on the areas that are most important for you to be at your best. Some common categories include:

      • Health & Energy
      • Work & Career
      • Confidence & Self-Belief
      • Relationships & Connection
      • Fun & Joy
      • Growth & Learning
      • Rest & Recovery
      • Leadership Presence or Influence

Feel free to personalise the labels so they reflect your language.

      Score Each Area (Now)
On a scale from 0 (low) to 10 (high), score how satisfied you currently feel in each area. Draw a line across each segment to reflect your score, creating a visual picture of your current “wheel.”

      Future Focus: Your Wheel Ahead
Now imagine a point in the future that feels meaningful for you, it could be 3 months, 1 year, or even 5 years from now.

      Ask yourself:

      • What would I like each of these scores to be by that time?
      • What does that future version of me have in place that’s different?
      • Draw a second line on the wheel for your future scores.

        Then reflect:

        1. What grabs your attention most?
        2. Which area has the biggest gap between now and the future?
        3. What would need to shift to start closing that gap?
        4. What’s one action or mindset change you could make to move towards that future version?

        Reflect on the Patterns

        1. Where are you thriving?
        2. Which areas feel neglected or under pressure?
        3. How balanced or unbalanced does your wheel feel overall?

        Finally, ask Yourself:

        1. What’s one small shift I could make to improve a lower-scoring area?
        2. What areas do I tend to prioritise—and which ones do I ignore when I’m under pressure?
        3. What does this wheel tell me about what I need in place to lead, live, and show up at my best?

Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Wheel of Life

        • Revisit your wheel regularly (monthly or quarterly) to track changes and reconnect with what matters.
        • Use it during moments of transition, overwhelm, or decision-making.
        • Pair it with journaling or coaching conversations to deepen insight.

        Why does it work?

This tool works because it invites you to step back and see the bigger picture of your life. It’s not about fixing everything, it’s about noticing what’s supporting you, what’s draining you, and what needs care.

When you understand your personal drivers for feeling grounded and resourced, you can lead more confidently, make better decisions, and move through uncertainty with more clarity.
