Modern Leadership: 3 Core Skills Managers Need in a Rapidly Changing World

We’re living in unprecedented times…Probably the most overused business phrase that exists.

Every generation before us has probably said the same thing.

But has leadership ever been more complex or demanding than it is today? The recent results from Gallup’s survey suggest that this is a significant challenge facing modern managers and leaders.

Consider just some of what’s happening in the world right now:

  • AI Disruption: Artificial Intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept, it’s here. According to the Microsoft Work Trend Index 2025, only 39% of employees feel prepared to effectively integrate AI into their daily roles, despite 75% using it regularly. AI is transforming not just workflows but entire industries, creating uncertainty about jobs, responsibilities, and even the meaning of work itself.
  • Geopolitical Instability: We’re experiencing multiple concurrent conflicts, economic uncertainty, and intense geopolitical tensions. This environment is placing enormous pressure on supply chains, markets, and employees’ psychological safety.
  • Shifts in Workplace Dynamics: Hybrid and remote work are now embedded in our culture. Connection, collaboration, and productivity must be reimagined and redefined continually.

These factors demand a new style of leadership, but from what we’re seeing, most managers and leaders aren’t receiving any training on how to navigate this (according to that same Gallup report, 44% of all managers haven’t received any formal training…!).

So, what skills does the modern leader need?

1. Connection-Centric Leadership

Creating meaningful connections within teams, and between teams and the broader organisation, is crucial, especially in hybrid environments.

Tip: Develop consistent rituals to bring people together. It can be as simple as weekly team check-ins or informal virtual coffee chats. When you do have your people together physically, the priority is building relationships (not broadcasting information to them and packing the agenda!!!).

2. Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

Modern leaders must possess self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, social skills, and motivation. Emotional Intelligence is no longer optional, it’s foundational. Take the ability to self regulate as one example. When we poll teams on manager effectiveness and what they value, one of the most consistent positives that comes from that is that people value a manager that is “calm under pressure”.

Tip: Regularly seek candid feedback from your team to build self-awareness, and thank them when they do (even if you don’t agree!). Create space in 1:1s to explore your team’s perspectives and experiences, and always, always, ask how you could improve their experience as an employee.

3. Clear Communication Amid Uncertainty

Leaders must communicate with clarity, even when the future is unclear. People crave transparency, even if it means admitting uncertainty. This one is a real balance. You need to be honest and authentic, but not so transparent that you create panic and anxiety. Framing is a highly effective leadership skill that’s criminally under valued.

Tip: Clearly articulate what is known, what is not, and how decisions will be made moving forward. Regularly update your team, maintaining trust through honesty. Don’t be afraid to say you don’t know… (better that than pretend – they will know you are).

Practical Recommendations for Modern Leaders:

  • Train for Adversity: Just as athletes train for competition, leaders need preparation for challenging times. Develop “What If” scenarios, so teams know exactly what to do when faced with adversity. Have a look at this article if you’d like a practical guide on how to run this with your team.
  • Invest in Human Skills: Technical skills are critical, but it’s emotional intelligence, adaptability, and resilience that set leaders apart. Prioritise regular EQ-focused development sessions for your teams if you can (our Culture Labs might be worth a look 👀)
  • Establish a Consistent Leadership Rhythm: Ensure regular and predictable interactions (like weekly 1:1s, team meetings, and strategic updates). A consistent rhythm helps teams stay focused, connected, and resilient, particularly during uncertainty. We see a lot of leaders getting lost in this noise, so take time to plan your structure and rhythm (and always ask yourself “why are we doing this” when assessing existing recurring meetings!).

Modern leadership isn’t about controlling everything, it’s about equipping your teams to navigate and thrive amidst constant change.

So, as you lead your teams today, ask yourself:

Are you training your teams to rise to your expectations, or fall back on their preparedness?
